8 March - UK Advanced Linguistics Olympiad

Linguists

In February, 12 students in Y12 participated in the UK Advanced Linguistics Olympiad. Students enjoying solving linguistic problems and cracking codes based around numerous languages, including Braille, Mongolian, Ndebele (spoken in parts of South Africa), Gumatj (a language spoken in Northern Australia by around 240 people). Participants also answered questions based on the Cippus Abellanus, a document carved into stone from the 2nd Century BCE, dealing with a legal dispute between the cities of Abella and Nola in Southern Italy.

The participants found the Olympiad challenging, but very exciting, and the standard expected was extremely high. All students performed very well; Jacob Gaskell won a Silver Award, and Raymond Guo and Jasper Maughan won Bronze Awards.
